Enhancing Lives through Transplantation
The excellence of a gift lies in its appropriateness rather than in its value.

frequently asked questions about tissue donation

Q. What tissues can be donated to help others?
A. Tissues such as skin, bones, eyes, tendons and heart valves are among the tissues most often used, but new advances in technology and surgical procedures continue to add to this list. One tissue donor can enhance the life of more than 50 patient recipients.

Q. What will others think about our family's decision to donate tissue?
A. Families who decide to donate often find that it helps them through their grieving process. They receive great comfort from being able to have something positive come from the death of a loved one.

Q. What do I do if a member of my family wanted to be a tissue donor but did not pre-register?
A. If no one on the medical team suggests tissue donation, the next-of-kin should inform the medical staff of your wishes. Tissues will only be recovered if staff is made aware that you want your loved one to be a tissue donor and receives written permission from the family.

Q. Who will receive the tissues that we donate?
A. Tissue transplants are given to people who urgently need them. As many as 50 people may be impacted by the tissues recovered from just one donor. 85% of tissue recovered and processed by Northwest Tissue Services will be used to help patients in this geographic area.

Q. Is there any cost to my family if we decide to donate tissue?
A. No. There is absolutely no cost to you or your family.

Q. Can we limit the tissues that we donate?
A. Yes. Simply write in which tissues and organs you wish to donate. Click here to register.

Q. Can people under the age of 18 be donors?
A. Yes, a custodial parent or legal guardian may choose to give consent at the time of death for people under the age of 18. In Washington, the minimum age to register as a donor is 15 1/2 and a custodial parent or legal guardian must sign as a witness on the registration form and give consent at the time of death.

Q. Will tissue donation affect funeral arrangements?
A. No. Recovery of tissues will not interfere with customary funeral arrangements. All arrangements for tissue recovery are coordinated by a Tissue Services coordinator to avoid interference with hospital routines and to minimize inconvenience.
